Description

This photograph depicts a crowd gathered at the Carson City V&T depot, seemingly awaiting the arrival of a train while they listed to the music of the Carson City Band (note the tubas under the depot eaves) and enjoyed the flags and decorations. Perhaps this was a War Bond Rally - a van parked across the tracks had a large poster apparently depicting servicemen. Perhaps the train was bringing someone like Betty Grable or Cary Grant who would entertain the crowd from the rear platform of a passenger car ending with an exhortation to support the war effort by buying bonds. It is obviously winter with even the foothills covered in snow and the crowd stands silently shivering; the young man in the sailor cap and the leather jacket - is he home on leave before heading out to the Pacific? The crowd is mostly women and older men - the young men are across the seas fighting the last just war.
